Tuesday, April 09, 20132003 Sanguineti Brunello di Montalcino
This well-aged Sangiovese is a light red with a slightly
orange brown tinged edge. The nose is
deep and rich with dried cherry, mushrooms, caramel and esters. The wine needs to breathe and take the air
before enjoying. The mouth feel is
medium with a generous fruit. The wine
is layered nicely through the middle with a long numbing tannic finish.
Score: 88
Cost: $ 44

Sunday, August 05, 20122006 Bodegas LAN Rioja Crianza
Ruby red color hints at depth and the nose fulfills the
promise with plum and fig, spicy white pepper, and dark caramel. It’s a
wonderful nose that keeps you coming back for more. The taste is very traditional Rioja, softer
than the nose would leave you to believe but nicely balanced. It has a soft
fruity start with a very spicy middle that matches the nose then a long subtle
growing, surprisingly soft tannic finish. This is a very approachable, very
well done wine. This is one of the best Riojas I've had it is available at
Harry and David Country Store now.
Drink now through 2013.

This is a very dark ruby colored Tempranillo blend from Spain. It has a splendid nose, berry, leather, cigar wrapper, and light esters. The wine is full bodied on the palate, a sweet round fruit with a very supple tannin and smooth lasting finish. This is a really good value in Tempranillo for under $20. Buy several bottles and save them for Taco and Enchilada night.

Wednesday, May 04, 20112006 Paseo Carménère Reserve
A gift from my wife from her sister for her birthday, this is a Chilean varietal of Carmenere. The wine is dark and well legged. The nose is slightly closed, but shows black fruit, tobacco and smoke. The taste is a rich fruit and longish tannin. Not overly complex or structured, but a good solid example of the varietal.

Score: 84
Cost: $ 15
Wine Type: Carménère, Chile, Central Valley, Maule Valley, Valle del Maule

Saturday, April 23, 20112006 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino
This is a still young Sangiovese based red, it really needs to breath for some time before it can be appreciated, up to several hours to fully open. We're having this today in honor of my daughter Rachel who is spending her University of Washington spring term in Rome, and my wife who is on her way tomorrow to join her for 10 days. The color of this wine is a fine ruby red, but with enough body as not to be transparent. After waiting the nose has cherry and tobacco, a slight barnyard when first opened that quickly fads. In the mouth this wine is well balance with a medium boy mouth feel. The cherry fruit is on front with a multiple layers of acid and tannin into the very long finish. This is very tasty and could go for many more years getting mellower all the time. 91 really quite good, cellar or drink 2011-2020.
