Impromptu Blind Tempranillo Tasting at Enoteca Tasting room in Ashland

Many good things seem to start on the golf course and today was no exception.  After a nice round of golf in the morning, the OWG crew was in Ashland for lunch at the Black Sheep pub.  Someone mentioned that we should go by Enoteca and procure a fine bottle of EdenVale Rosso Rubino, always a OWG favorite.

We walked into Enoteca and for $10 they were having a six producer Tempranillo flight.  We asked if they would do it blind for use, so we didn’t know the order and Lynda Morrison, (of the Band Mercy), and Misty Santos set us up.  Tasting detailed data for scoring is at this link: Scoring Data

Just a few quick notes regarding the judging and results that are interesting:
1. The Winner wine was the least expensive but won by over 12 points to second place.
2. Southern Oregon wines did very well taking  5 of the top 6 spots.
3.  The wine with the highest score from Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator finished last
4. The most expensive wine in the tasting came in second to last.

So congratulations are in order  for :
Bronze Medalist: 2005 Eden Vale Syrah  a lovely fruit nose and splendid berry fruit palate
Silver Medalist: 2007 Quady North Syrah Steelhead run with its intense nose and taste.
Gold Medalist 2007 Henry’s Drive “Dead Letter Office” Shiraz.  Made in the Cote-Rotie style with a brilliant nose and deep complex flavor and finish.
