Abacela - Vine & Wine Center Opening May 14th

Click to view on Abacela's Site    Abacela on Blogger Abacela on Google Calendar Abacela on Facebook Abacela on Twitter

Abacela's week-long grand opening of our new Vine & Wine Center starts Saturday, May 14 and runs through Friday, May 20, 2011. The spacious, eco-friendly facility will be open 11:00 am until 6:00 pm daily.

The facility, a blend of Mediterranean and Pacific Northwest architectural styles, uses the rugged and elemental to create an open, welcoming feeling. There are multiple venues supporting both traditional wine tasting or in depth terroir-driven tasting in the two-level 4,000 square foot structure. Heating and cooling is accomplished with a highly efficient, "green" geothermal system. A tunnel links the Vine & Wine Center to the cellar where older fine wines are properly stored. Private tastings hosted by either winemaker Andrew Wenzl, or proprietor Earl Jones will be conducted in the Library Wine Cellar by appointment.

The Vine & Wine Center is located within our 76 acre vineyards where the steep fault line topography, complex soils and differing sun exposures create three natural landscapes or "micro-terroirs". Visitors may enjoy a glass of wine surrounded by these panoramic vineyard and mountain views on the outdoor patio or make an appointment to tour the winery. The adventurous will likely stroll the "Winegrowers Walk" to study displays of the climate, geology and soils of Abacela.  Combining terroir-driven tastings with tangible facts gained from the Winegrowers Walk should enable visitor to leave with a sense of place.

If you haven’t been out to Abacela recently, now would be the time! A new road loops through the vineyard and up to the new building. We invite you to visit, taste, tour and explore!

Earl & Hilda Jones, Proprietors

Cowhorn's Latest News

> View in browser

Biodyanmic Rhone-style Wines • Applegate Valley • Oregon

Hello Club members and Grapevine subscribers!

We're happy to report that the 2011 season is off to a great start. Asparagus is coming on stronger than ever, grape buds have broken, and we just shipped 5,000 used wine bottles to Rebootle to be upcycled into one-of-a-kind, handmade glassware. You'll learn more about all of this in the next issue of The Grapevine.

The real reason we're writing is to give the Cowhorn community a heads up that seasonal tourist traffic through our Applegate Valley tasting room is picking up, and we don't expect the very small supply of our best reds yet to last too much longer. As promised, we're dropping everyone a quick note to let you know that this may be your last chance to stock up on our first Reserve Syrah, a wine for "big red" lovers, and our 2009 Grenache 80, a refined follow up to its rich, unfiltered predecessor that become somewhat of a rockstar around the Rogue region.

Thank you all again for being a part of Cowhorn's continued success as the Rogue wine region's only certified Biodynamic® estate winery. We are grateful!

News from Kathryn Hall - partnering with the Willamette Valley

Kathryn Hall from Napa Valley makes some of my favorite Cabernet Sauvignon.

I am including this in happenings because I believe we  should compare the Cabernet Sauvs from the Rogue Valley to those Napa Cabs for price and taste. Why should I buy a $40 southern Oregon Cab when I can get something that WOW's me for the same price from Napa? Not to say that that I am not going to try every one that I can get my hands on in Oregon, hope does spring eternal.

Let those appellations do what they do best and Napa is particularly good at Cabernet Sauvignon.

If you prefer a Southern Oregon Cab for the price, by all means, enjoy.
I have not found one that can match my palate as exquisitely for the price of the Hall or Shafer offerings.

This is where the news comes in:
Kathryn Hall and Roessler Cellers have partnered to produce Pinot Noir.
Rossler Cellars have vineyards in Sonoma and the Willamette Valley.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this partnership and outstanding wine makers.
I'll be keeping an eye out with high expectations.

Rising Sun Farms closes tasting room

One of our favorite spots to stop and taste wine and cheese was the tasting room and store for Rising Sun Farms. They had cheeses and crackers and vinegars and wine to mix and match, it was always a hit.

But no more, from the company's website:
3/25/2011 - The Store and Tasting Room are closed

The Store/Tasting Room is closed. The good news is that Rising Sun Farms is healthy, growing and expanding. The bad news is that means that we had to take over the store space to make room for more offices. No more wine tasting or torta sampling here...but don't despair!  We have so many retail partners in the Rogue Valley and beyond who can meet your needs for our products. And see our links for more wineries in the Valley. Click here for a list of stores in the northwest
